Summary of Raising the Floor on Nets Convening on ITN Quality and Performance, May 2022
Raising the Floor on Nets Convening on ITN Quality and Performance
May 17 – 19, 2022. Liverpool, United Kingdom
The convening was a three-day, in-person workshop hosted by I2I and CHAI in Liverpool, UK.
It was the second such meeting, following the first convening (December 2021). The primary aim of the meeting was to outline a framework approach to ITN quality and performance, discuss major challenges around net quality and performance and opportunities to resolve these challenges, and to chart a way forward.
The objectives of the second meeting were:
Provide an update on the activities prioritized following the first convening in December 2021.
To present an overview of factors that influence and drive net quality and performance, with a focus on post-shipment issues.
To discuss potential solutions and pathways to fundamentally improve ITN quality and performance while addressing program country concerns.
To build consensus and buy-in for these solutions among key stakeholders.
The Automatic Classification of Pyriproxyfen-Affected Mosquito Ovaries
A new method for measuring the effect ofpyriproxyfen on mosquito fertility using a machine learning approach has been published.
Using a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, researchers were able to automatically classify the fertility status of ovaries from PPF-exposed female mosquitoes. This recent work by members of I2I was published as part of the special issue on mosquito control in the journal Insects.
Developing Consensus Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to Evaluate New Types of Insecticide-Treated Nets
Experts have published updated protocols for assessing the durability of insecticide-treated bednets containing second active ingredients to fight insecticide resistance.
Following a recent consultationof relevant stakeholders, ofuniversity researchers, research organisations involved in ITNs durability monitoring studies, and procurement bodies, a new proposed set of guidelines and SOPs for assessing the durability of several dual-AI ITNs was agreed. The work is now published in the special issue on insecticides for mosquito control in the journalInsects. The publication focuses on the methods used to develop this set of optimized SOPs,which assessthe bioefficacy of nets containing a pyrethroid plus either chlorfenapyr, PBO or PPF. The methods and SOPs have been discussed and agreed with all the relevant stakeholders.
Opening Presentation- Raising the Floor on Nets December 2021
I2I has partnered with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) and the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) to co-host a convening addressing issues pertaining to ITN quality and performance.
The convening, from the 14-16th December, brings together stakeholders from across the ITN product development and delivery spectrum. Consisting of manufacturers, procurers, country programs, implementation partners and WHO the convening aims to discuss perceptions, challenges and successes in ITN development and quality management.
I2I and CHAI opened the meeting on December 14th by presenting an overview of the key issues.
